Question by Eric K: Do I need chains if driving to Lake Tahoe from San Francisco this weekend?
I have a rear-wheel drive car and figure that the roads are now cleared. If there is no snow through the weekend, will I be OK without snow chains–both legally (meaning that they will not be required) and practically (meaning that I will be safe driving without them)?

Snow from the recent storms has been cleared from most of the major mountain roads, so unless there is another storm between now and this weekend that will require them, there will not be a legal requirement to have chains. You can check the websites of the California and Nevada Departments of Transportation, linked below, to see current road conditions for the major roads in the area.
That having been said, though, it’s always a good idea to carry chains in the Sierra during the winter months, in case of unexpected weather changes.
